Choose your plants based on the climate and soils of the area.

Finally, consider the mature height and width of a plant, especially for shrubs and trees. You don't want to plant too close to the house, other plants, rooflines, or overhead utility lines. With a Masters degree and professional experience in Landscape Architecture, I want to teach everything I know - and explore everything I don't - around landscape and garden design. The final idea is simple – make a meadow with some taller trees dotted throughout. A winding path can be mown through the space to provide access. The trees can be placed to, again, block views in while allowing a view of the warm brick wall that glows in summer.

We do this by utilizing our in-house Build Team made up of former contractors and our Pro Network of vetted professional landscapers across the country. Here are a few design ideas for smaller scale plantings using native plants. If your growing conditions differ from those described here, please talk with a  Grow Native!

Starting with a plan means that you'll be less likely to make mistakes or be unhappy with the results. You should plan your landscape even if you want to hire a pro to do the work. If you're doing the project yourself, even more reason to spend time carefully laying out how you want your yard to look. Start by imagining your dream yard, collect images of the types of gardens you're drawn to, then sketch a landscape plan of your dreams (you can always scale back to fit your budget).

Also measure each window’s distance from the ground so you don’t block it with oversized plants or structures. If you want to create a really good design for your garden, it can be helpful to have a broader understanding of landscape design. I'll walk you through my knowledge of Landscape Design Theory,...

A place to gather with loved ones, share stories, and create lasting memories. Surround the property with hedges or low walls through continuous drawing and a few clicks. Add a lawn to cover the base level of the property by dragging the lawn tool across the desired area of the property.

With 360-degree views of the design, clients can picture themselves in the space. 3D renderings also illustrate how the landscape plan complements the look of the home. If your garden lacks winter interest, consider planting trees and shrubs with peeling bark and unique textures, which provide interest to your garden year-round. Vining plants can provide screening and privacy on a deck or patio. Vines in pots work just as well as those planted in beds. This layout, designed by renowned gardener Jon Carloftis, is overflowing with amazing edible plants that are easy for anyone to grow.

And if some of your ideas initially seem odd or unattainable, keep them for now because they'll all eventually help you hone in on the right decisions for your space. Note the topography, showing which locations are sloped, sunny, or shaded (don't forget to note sun and wind patterns). The southern or southeastern face of your house provides warming rays in winter and sun all day in summer. In regions where you can spend time outside year-round, these are perfect locations for sitting areas since they're protected from harsh northwestern winds. However, these spots might be too bright and hot in summer to be comfortable. Consider how you want foot traffic to flow through your yard.

Whether it's a tropical tiki bar, a sleek cocktail station, or a multi-functional outdoor kitchenette, a DIY garden bar can become the focal point of outdoor entertaining. Embrace modern style with a garden that prioritises simplicity and low maintenance. The large, well-maintained lawn provides a clean backdrop.

Ergonomics Of Bedroom Design: Simplified

ergonomics design

The Indian Society of Ergonomics, established in 1983, is the only professional body that represents ergonomics in the country. There are various occupational hygiene and safety laws added in the legislation to ease the workers. Ergonomic design can also improve employee satisfaction by creating a more comfortable and enjoyable work environment. When workers are comfortable and safe, they are more likely to be satisfied with their job and less likely to experience burnout or other negative outcomes. Ergonomics focuses on safety, comfort, ease of use, aesthetics and performance. These categories aim to create a natural fit between people and their environments.

ergonomics design

Ergonomic keyboard and mouse

The power zone refers to the zone where interacting with objects has the least amount of effort spent, it is also known as “hand shake zone”. If the product is designed to be held, the designer should consider this position as the standard. The design for heavy products should consider reducing the excessive force needed or used to pull, push, or carry the product. Alternative solutions should be adapted to reduce the use of force, such as using wheels for these products.

Computer monitor

And if you lack the support, you suffer from pain that hints you to prepare for an approaching chronic condition. Our work from home furniture take care of your back with lumbar support pillow to knowing the biomechanics of knee joints. Needless to day, we incorporate ergonomics in product design tactically. Cushioning is provided in an ergonomic chair to relieve pressure by distributing weight across the cushion. It encourages occupational safety, better seating posture, and softens an uncomfortable hard seat. Since you are now aware of the dangers of not using an ergonomic design for your workstation, it’s time to modify your workstation according to your physical needs.

“The best posture is your next posture.”

While this principle applies more to physical products, it can still be applied in digital designs. For example, interactive design should consider a quick reach for information so users do not need to spend long periods of time in front of a computer or mobile screen. When it comes to ergonomic bedroom design, it comes down to your bedroom furniture and how you place them. Your bed should be positioned in the center of the room with enough space to walk around. The bed should be easy to get into and get out of without straining your back.

The mousepads with an ergonomic design have one or two feature that make them more usable. They are generally curved or raised on the thumb side to support the hand in a handshake position. An ergonomic work desk design is one that keeps the position of your neck, back, and knees safe. And adjustable desk with storage also keep clutter away so your subconscious mind focuses on what’s important. Now, that you have an understanding of what is ergonomic design, let’s take a deeper look at office ergonomics further.

The Role of White Space in User Interface Design

The Secretlab TITAN Evo’s full-length backrest ensures total support for every part of your back, ranging from your lumbar spine to your head and neck. It leaves your upper back unsupported, leading to accumulated stress and fatigue as the day goes on. Dr. Goh’s research interests lie in the areas of tissue engineering, prosthetics and orthotics, biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, gait analysis, and more. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Goh has accumulated multiple accolades under his belt and has been published in top journals in biomedicine and bioengineering. Our designers also consult with an independent Ergonomics Advisory Board comprising experts in biomechanics, orthopedics, and esports medicine — so multidisciplinary considerations are addressed in all our designs.

We fully intend to continue to deliver the best chairs and desks in the world.

If possible, set the sensitivity of the mouse or pointer so you can use a light touch on it. Just as you need to function actively while working from home, the other rooms crave for something similar. Arm and wrist exercises increase flexibility and lower the risk of injury. Thus, a comfortable home chair office built ergonomically has all these features that understand your needs.

As an academic and author, I've had the privilege of shaping the design landscape. I teach design at the University of Leeds and am the Programme Leader for the MA Design, focusing on design thinking, design for health, and behavioural design. I've developed and taught several innovative programmes at Wrexham Glyndwr University, Northumbria University, and The American University in Cairo.

Pay special attention to spaces such as wardrobes and reading areas. Lighting can also be used to emphasise aspects of bedroom décor, such as art or photographs. You can consider beds with built-in drawers, and other storage spaces such as behind the headboard. Built-in shelves and cabinets are others ways to keep the bedroom neat and organised.

Have you ever experienced discomfort while using your work desk design and thought about the reason? If your desk has a hard edge, either pad it or use wrist rests.Wrist rests are intended to support the straight wrist and reduce the pressure from the wrist by providing a soft surface to relax. However, one should keep in mind that these are wrist “rests” and not wrist “supports.” Therefore, they should only be used to take a break while typing.

A good rule to follow is to keep elbows near a 90-degree angle when typing or using a mouse. Your elbows should hang comfortably by the side of your body, forming a L-shape at the elbow joint. Then, position yourself close enough to your desk so that you can use your keyboard and mouse without losing that L-shape. Bring your monitor close enough so you can comfortably read your monitor while keeping earlobes in line with shoulders. Ergonomics is about designing tasks to fit people rather than people having to conform to tasks.

In an office, for example, the proper ergonomic design would mean comfortable chairs at the proper height, with computers and other necessary objects within easy reach. Ergonomics aims to consider the user environment and behaviour while using a specific design of the product. These principles of ergonomics could be applied to both physical and digital products.

This principle focuses solely on the context of use and the environment that users are in while using the product or service. The neutral posture refers to the human body being aligned and balanced. The standard and balanced posture reduces the stress applied to muscles, tendons, nerves, and bones.

Thelma Welch began introducing new dishes to the menu along with the recipes handed down from previous owners. People traveled from all over country and the world to sample her food. Many would say they waited up to 3 hours on any given Sunday for a feast at her table. After her passing, Frank remarried – to Ester C Hall and planned construction of a home on the plot of land he’d acquired east of the square.

The Historic Inn was built back in 1898 by Frank Hall as a wedding gift to his wife Esther. He never mined the vein because of his wealthy holdings from his occupation as foreman of the Dahlonega mines.

The mine shaft was discovered when Freddy and his wife Shirley, the current owners, were doing a major renovation project. During the construction of the old dining room and a new addition, workers found a large size round hole and shaft under a concrete slab they were removing. After removing debris from the shaft, they discovered discarded contents of the house from days past. Cleaning out the shaft down many feet – to their surprise they found the famous vein of gold was right there – in the side wall of the shaft.

Unwrap the gingerbread house pieces and make sure they have no cracks or chips. Alternatively, you can use melted chocolate to stick the gingerbread house pieces together. Chocolate will harden faster than royal icing, but it might be a little more messy to work with. If you don’t want to make one from scratch, you can find a 26.4-ounce Gingerbread House Kit on the shelves of Trader Joe’s during the holiday season.

It was constructed with basic gingerbread and covered in royal icing. This Painted Lady-replica is made of all gingerbread and covered with colored modeling chocolate-siding. The shingles were all handcrafted out of a combination of modeling chocolate and fondant. The red ribbons and green garland trimming were handcrafted out of marzipan. This intricate gingerbread house took 180 hours to prepare and finish.

📋 Gingerbread House Recipes

For added stability, squeeze icing along the inside edge of all pieces and corners. Once dry, remove any spice jars you’ve used to prop up the panels. Position your template patterns at least 1/2 in. Cut around patterns with a sharp knife or pizza cutter; remove patterns. Feel free to cut out a door or windows into the panels. Remove dough scraps; cover and save to re-roll if needed.

Edible Fairy House

OR, you have the option of removing the scrap dough, and baking just the shapes you need (Image 27). Any remaining space can be used to cut out the chimney parts, and other gingerbread shapes you like. Step 8 – Cut out the templates using a ruler and your craft knife. Try to keep the lines as straight as possible.

Ingredients

A gingerbread barn inspired by traditional trips to a Christmas tree farm. The barn sides are rolled and cut with piped gingerbread battens, attached before baking. All of the tiny wreaths, trees, and greenery are made from royal icing. The horse, little girl, and snowman are made from gum paste. Royal icing is hands down the best option for gingerbread construction. It hardens up rock hard and is the glue that will hold the walls and roof of your house well while still being edible.

Use slightly thick cardboard and non-toxic glue like a glue stick. Apply the glue on the back of the printed template. Remember to apply the glue outside of the template line AND inside (Image 17). Form each dough portion into a smooth disc, while dusting it with flour to prevent it from sticking (Image 14). Turn the dough out onto your work surface, and gently knead it a few times to make sure all the flour is incorporated in the dough.

This is the Jordan House, which the builder found images of on the internet to replicate. He wanted to create a project with a Mansard roof. I used the Ateco 352 leaf tip and Ateco 32 star tip to create the different types of branches and leaves on these trees. I recommend starting a little above the base of the overturned sugar cone and working your way up to the top to cover it with icing. I was able to hold it on the inside with my fingers and just twist my wrist to work around the cone. I recommend making the gingerbread a day or two in advance so that you can relax and enjoy putting the gingerbread house together later.

Or once the cookie dough is rolled up, it can be stored in the freezer overnight (or up to 2 days if wrapped with plastic wrap). Once two pieces are stuck to the base, pipe icing along the border where they join, to cement the two pieces together (Image 39). Mix until you get a smooth, thick royal icing mixture (Image 34). The correct consistency should be spreadable but stiff, so that the royal icing will not “run” or spread, but still easily pipeable (Image 35). If you’re using egg whites, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until you have a foamy mixture (Images 31 and 32).

Many of their flavors are inspired by drinks, cocktails and other desserts, like a Samoa cupcake made with coconut, chocolate and caramel. When images of Southern California come to mind, most people think of palm trees, sandy beaches, and crashing ocean waves. Here’s a look at one of our favorite SoCal destinations that will remind you of a charming and magical gingerbread village. For a warm twist on the holidays, this flower power house has an ocean theme, complete with gum paste surfboards, a canoe, and even a visiting sea gull. With a serrated knife, cut the chimney pieces at an angle to align to your roof, then attach with icing. To add the back, squeeze the icing on the bottom and side edges of the back piece; position with the other assembled pieces.

Roll out the dough and use cutters to create the different star shapes. With the low-speed mix, blend in the flour and water to make a stiff dough. So, I  had to come up and a Plan B. I ended up making the windows out of melted candy and then had to put them on from the outside. Icing "curtains" was the only way I could think to cover up my mistake so you wouldn't see the jagged edges of the candy windows. Preparing the Walls

This gingerbread pyramid has 4 levels featuring a nativity scene, a toy train, Santa’s sled pulled by three reindeer, and angels. The ingredients include gingerbread, royal icing, marzipan, fondant, and trimmed lasagna noodles for the propeller blades. This gingerbread project depicts a scene from the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty, but the castle is a gingerbread replica of a real historical sandstone building. The pattern was constructed from architectural plans created by the artist.

Belle’s Bakery

2 containers of our Royal Icing are included, and our elves assort five different varieties of candy for you and your family to decorate your house. The majority of this display’s details are made of brown fondant and white royal icing. To recreate the rounded shingles shown here, you can ben fondant pieces around a curved object, such as a dowel, and let them dry. The decorative flowers are made from gumpaste, which can be sculpted like clay before it hardens to a porcelainlike state. This tasty model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is built to scale.

When you receive your order, the icing will be in a container that we have stored in our cooler. If you do not intend to use the icing immediately, we recommend storing it in a refrigerator until you are ready. When ready, keep the icing covered while allowing it to come to room temperature. Any unused icing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. The smooth icing stucco seen on this sugary theater required a small putty knife.

The balloons are gumballs on thin painted wires. This flower power house features gum paste surfboards, a canoe, and even a visiting sea gull. The smooth icing stucco required a small putty knife. Sugar wafers were used as shutters and shredded wheat cereal as a roof.

Carefully shaped red fondant on the roof mimics terra cotta shingles and gum paste flowers fill each window’s planter box. Fill the decorating bag two-thirds full with icing. If you’ve made your royal icing in advance, give it beat with a hand mixer to restore its smooth, fluffy texture.

Eater SF

I was so nervous that it would crumble or fall apart and it was sturdy and easy to work with. We left it out to dry for a week before proceeding with assembly. The icing is one of the trickiest parts to get right. This means it will stay sticky for longer, making more of a mess.

Decorative Candy and Other Items

Look closely to see a gingerbread bartender holding a gummy soda. The recipe called for 110 eggs, 75 pounds of flour, 2 gallons of molasses, 15 pounds of brown sugar, 23 pounds of royal icing, and 55 pounds of candies. There are edible tunnels, slides, reclining chairs, a motorized carousel, a skating pond, and a working train. While this fun baking project is technically 100% edible, it doesn't exactly taste amazing.

The exact proportions can be tricky to calculate—which is why we went ahead and played architect for you. All you need to do is print and cut out the patterns (you can download them here). Before you prep the dough, preheat the oven to 300°. Finish off your house design with some landscaping.

This house, based on the movie Up, earned the first place prize in the teen division of the 2010 National Gingerbread Competition. Each character was sculpted from fondant and gum paste. The colorful balloons are pieces of spaghetti topped with jelly beans. The stucco exterior is white royal icing and the timber framing is chocolate fondant. This gingerbread house was built for a retirement facility and is a model of their building.

The icing makes a huge difference when decorating a house and gives it extra stability. This recipe is the best icing for building and decorating. It’s light and fluffy, easy to pipe but also dries hard. Cake decorating and in this case, gingerbread house decorating, is an extremely forgiving art - you can cover up so many blunders! And even make it look like it was supposed to be that way. "Our thing is that we'll make any flavor you want, so we don't have a set menu," said Angel.

Pipe more royal icing on the base to stick the front (or back) of the house, perpendicular to the wall (Image 38). Place the royal icing in a large piping bag or a ziploc bag (Image 36). Seal the opening of the piping bag or ziploc bag, making sure to remove as much air as possible. Exposure to air will cause the royal icing to harden.

Best practices for REST API design

restful api design

JavaScript, for example, has an inbuilt method to parse JSON data through the fetch API because JSON was primarily made for it. But if you are using any other programming language such as Python or PHP, they now all have methods to parse and manipulate JSON data as well. In this article, I will take you through 9 best practices to follow while making REST APIs. This will help you make the best APIs possible and also make the lives of your API consumers easier. In Web Development, REST APIs play an important role in ensuring smooth communication between the client and the server. Learn how the API design process can help teams deliver adaptable, testable, and well-documented APIs to consumers.

Use parameters

To help you avoid these pitfalls, here are six of the most common mistakes we have seen developers make while creating the API — and guidance on how to get it right. All resources have a set of methods that can be operated against them to work with the data being exposed by the API. REStful APIs comprise majorly of HTTP methods which have well defined and unique actions against any resource.

How to Implement Swagger

So, it's our job to implement a good and precise documentation. There are some great tools out there that make our lives easier. I think there's a lot truth in this statement because if an API is not well documented it can't be used properly and therefore becomes useless. The documentation helps make developers' lives a lot easier, too.

Architecture

This can be handled inside another middleware we use for the routes we'd like to protect. For example our POST request to /api/v1/workouts for creating a new workout. One appropriate example is to use redis or the express middleware apicache.

Assign proper API versioning

A few extra bytes in the payload can save a lot of early confusion and accelerate adoption of your API. Notice how user-ids appearing on the left of the colon (in the position where other examples of JSON ideally have property names) creates confusion in reading the payload. “K”eep “I”t “S”imply “S”tupid when you are designing your API. While APIs are meant for computer-to-computer interaction, the first client of an API is always a human, and the API contract is the first piece of documentation. Developers are more apt to study your payload design before they dig into your docs. Observation studies suggest that developers spend more than 51% of their time in editor and client as compared to ~18% on reference.

best practices for REST API design

Though REST also intends to make the web (internet) more streamlined and standard, Roy Fielding advocates using REST principles more strictly. And that’s where people try to start comparing REST with the web. The layered system style allows an architecture to be composed of hierarchical layers by constraining component behavior. In a layered system, each component cannot see beyond the immediate layer they are interacting with.

restful api design

This is the way Swagger UI identifies the documentation within our code. We've put them in this file since it makes sense to have the docs as close to the endpoints as possible, but you could place them wherever you want. SuperTest is built on top of the popular testing library Mocha, and uses the Chai assertion library to make assertions about the responses received. It provides an easy-to-use API for making HTTP requests, including support for authentication, headers, and request bodies. The data format of a representation is known as a media type.

You can design your RESTful web service to run on several servers with multiple layers such as security, application, and business logic, working together to fulfill client requests. Where kesh92 is the username of a specific user in the users collection, and will return the location and date of joining for kesh92. These are just some of the ways you could design parameters that strive towards API completion and help your end developers use your API intuitively. If you’re having second thoughts about a specific resource or collection’s functionality, then leave it for the next iteration. The base URL should be neat, elegant, and simple so that developers using your product can easily use them in their web applications.

Microsoft REST API Guidelines Are Not RESTful - InfoQ.com

Microsoft REST API Guidelines Are Not RESTful.

Posted: Thu, 21 Jul 2016 07:00:00 GMT [source]

This approach focuses on steps and tools that support the process of API design, placing few, if any, constraints on the nature of the APIs to generate. In a real application, you will need to apply the configuration on the device – OR you may want to remove the configuration from the device (not from the primary collection). You shall use PUT and DELETE methods in this case, because of their idempotent nature. So our resource URIs and their representation are fixed now.

REST APIs communicate through HTTP requests to perform standard database functions like creating, reading, updating and deleting records (also known as CRUD) within a resource. REST APIs usually send static resources, but in certain cases, responses can also contain executable code (such as Java applets). Every application is prone to errors, which is why error handling is so important. A good API should always return the proper HTTP error code that correctly explains the nature of the specific error that has occurred. We should never use verbs like DELETE, PUT, or GET in our API endpoints as they are similar to the standard HTTP request methods.

And to document a possible error case we're only throwing a 5XX error at this point. So under "responses" you can see that I've also defined another documentation for that. Documenting endpoints also helps you to understand them better and "forces" you to think of anything you might have forgotten to implement.

When you take a close look at our response, you'll see that we haven't defined the correct return value because we're just saying that our "data" property will be an array of empty objects. This should look very familiar if you've already worked with API's that have OpenAPI documentation. This is the view where all our endpoints will be listed and you can extend each one to get more information about it. This will be the function we'll use in our root file, where we created the Express server to make sure that the docs are booted up as well.

Before we write any API-specific code we should be aware of versioning. Like in other applications there will be improvements, new features, and stuff like that. The third layer is the Data Access Layer where we'll be working with our Database. We'll be exporting some methods for certain database operations like creating a WOD that can be used by our Service Layer. The whole business logic will be in the Service Layer that exports certain services (methods) which are used by the controller.

Rest is an architectural style and that leaves lots of discussion and debate on the standards of details from design to implementation. Here we will discuss how a Restful API could be designed from requirements and considering various debates that exists in the industry and developer community. Most modern-day applications should return JSON responses unless you have a legacy app that still needs to get an XML response. Sometimes we need to have an API that should be telling more stories than just by id. Here we should make use of query parameters to design the API.

This has the necessary information about the blog post, as well as the hypermedia links to the related resources such as author and comments. Clients can follow these links to discover additional information or perform actions. If the response is cacheable, the client application gets the right to reuse the response data later for equivalent requests and a specified period. REST is an acronym for REpresentational State Transfer and an architectural style for distributed hypermedia systems. Roy Fielding first presented it in 2000 in his famous dissertation. Since then it has become one of the most widely used approaches for building web-based APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

When possible, resources should be cacheable on the client or server side. Server responses also need to contain information about whether caching is allowed for the delivered resource. The goal is to improve performance on the client side, while increasing scalability on the server side. As internet traffic has increased, more and more data is being fetched every day. A good API is a backbone for any system to keep things running smoothly. If we follow the above practices while designing our APIs, the result will be highly functional and performant applications.
